Hello
Insiders!
HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO!!
Recently, I was called on to assist a
client with a few rendering projects. The task
was quite extensive and of course we were
under serious time constraints. So we put our
collective brains together to devise a
strategy to expedite the process.
Theoretically, of course, the plan worked just
fine. We did, however, learn a few things on
the application side.
Moral of the tale: All great ideas are just
that... GREAT IDEAS! Implementation is what
makes or breaks these ideas, which come from
thinking outside of the box (you know who you
are...)

FTC Alert: Identity Theft Scam
A
new Spam
Scam
Alert from the Federal Trade Commission could
help consumers avoid becoming identity theft
victims. The Alert, "Someone Is Phishing
For Your Information," warns that
consumers may receive e-mails that claim to be
from regulations.gov, a government Web site
where consumers can comment on federal
rule-making. The e-mails' subject lines
typically read, "Official
information," or "Urgent information
to all credit card holders!" and claim

Notes |

| For
all of us who feel only the deepest
love and affection for the way computers
have enhanced our lives, read on. At a
recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill
Gates reportedly compared the computer
industry with the auto industry and
stated, "If GM had kept up with
technology like the computer industry
has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars
that got 1,000 miles to the
gallon."
In response to Bill's comments,
General Motors issued a press release
stating:
If GM had developed technology like
Microsoft, we would all be driving cars
with the following characteristics:
1. For no reason whatsoever, your car
would crash twice a day.
2. Every time they repainted the lines
in the road, you would have to buy a new
car.
3. Occasionally your car would die on
the freeway for no reason. You would
have to pull over to the side of the
road, close all of the windows, shut off
the car, restart it, and reopen the
windows. For some reason you would
simply accept this.
4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver
such as a left turn would cause your car
to shut down and refuse to restart, in
which case you would have to reinstall
the engine.
5. Macintosh would make a car that was
powered by the sun, was reliable, five
times as fast and twice as easy to drive
-- but would run on only five percent of
the roads.
6. The oil, water temperature, and
alternator warning lights would all be
replaced by a single "This Car Has
Performed An Illegal Operation"
light.
7. The airbag system would ask "Are
you sure?" before deploying.
8. Occasionally, for no reason
whatsoever, your car would lock you out
refuse to let you in until you
simultaneously lifted the door turned
the key and grabbed hold of the radio
antenna.
9. Every time a new car was introduced
car buyers would have to learn to drive
all over again because none of the
controls would operate in the same
manner as the old car.
10. You'd have to press the
"Start" button to turn the
engine off.

Spybot
Search and Destroy v1.2
Search your hard disk for so-called
spybots or adbots, the modules that
are responsible for showing ads and
transmitting information back to
vendors. If Spybot Search and Destroy
finds such modules, it will remove
them or replace them with empty
dummies. In most cases, the host
software still runs after removing the
bot. Among the adbots Spybot targets:
Aureate, CLPRS, Comet Cursors, eZula
HotText, Gator, GoHip, Radiate,
WebHancer, and WildTangent. Spybot
also removes your usage tracks (last
visited Web sites, opened files,
started programs, and cookies), so
even spybots that are unknown can't
transmit this private information. The
program supports all three major
browsers: Internet Explorer, Netscape
Communicator, and Opera.
Operating Systems:Windows XP,
Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows NT,
Windows 9.x

ZoneAlarm v4.5.538
If you have DSL or a cable modem, your
IP address is permanent. Although this
has benefits, it also carries the
serious shortcoming of rendering your PC
vulnerable to attacks. A firewall, in
this respect, becomes not just desirable
but a necessity. ZoneAlarm is a top
choice, and best of all, the basic
version is free. You can block
uninitiated and unwanted traffic, even
while your PC is unattended or while
you're not using your connection. You
can also limit your exposure to attack
by specifying which applications can
access the Internet.
Operating System(s):Windows XP,
Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows NT,
Windows 98
